Bob Gilbert’s debut novel Mintwood Place is a delightfully fresh version in the noir tradition, offering the reader a contemporary “Casablanca” in Washington D.C. The book’s narrator, Renaissance man Joe Green, has plenty to say about love, politics and the male psyche in this page-turning romantic suspense. Joe runs a bookstore and a bistro, and painfully navigates a modern divorce while the Senate Intelligence Committee investigates his relationship with Cosmo, a protégé, who has recently been paroled after serving five years in prison for the ambiguous killing of a local black youth. Green, a proud Jersey boy, can all at once relax by watching his tortoises, hand out liberal advice to his three teenagers, and pack serious heat. He is a twenty-first century American male if ever there was one.

This is the not the kind of book I usually read. I'm partial to high intensity thrillers but Gilbert struck a nerve with me. I can't quite explain it - although the DC venue is a plus as I live there. The book was well written, thoughtfully written, in fact. Lots of dialogue which was well done without being distracting. Every once is a while the author's knowledge of history and book smarts come through without being annoying.I pay it high compliment when I say that the book was just damn enjoyable to read.

There seems to be a story there, but it is never completed to satisfaction. Characterization, on the other hand, was quite well done. The author is potentially a really good writer, but I also found this book unnecessarily crude.
There's a line in this book that makes my blood run cold. Protagonist Joe Green talks about how great sex is with women who've suffered sexual abuse. It sounds like Donald Trump! I couldn't get past it. Vile.
first person narrative set in DC's great melting pot neighborhood of Adams Morgan by a middle aged restaurateur and used rare bookstore owner who is mixed up in single parenthood, kinky sex, and international intrigue, all at once
I'm with Larry Kahaner - and I know it was the DC setting that drew me in and the knowledge some of the action took place in a small bookstore. Begs for a sequel at least for those of us who got caught up in the characters inhabiting the book. Nice shoutout for Busboys!
Oh and "Joannie" with two "n"s? Mine isn't tho many make it that.
